I’m sure all you lash pros out there have heard this question time and time again. “Will lash extensions ruin my natural lashes?” This is my number one asked question, so I really wanted to address it here. First of all, I love that my clients are inquisitive and I always like to reassure them that they are in good hands. That being said, what is the best way to answer this question? My goal is to put them at ease, but also to give them a well-informed answer that they can share with their friends. My way of answering a question like that is never just, “No”. I lean on educating the client in the process and understanding, so they have a full understanding as to why I can knowingly say “No, lash extensions will not ruin your lashes.” The more balanced and informative you can be, the better.
Oh, and surprise, surprise, Google is not our friend. Don’t leave it to Google. I tried typing in this question and some scary articles came up. I have seen many an article that if read by someone who is uninformed about what it is we do, would be terrified to get lash extensions. Simply said, yes, there are those lash horror stories out there, but the misinformation that goes along with them can take its toll.
Really, the goal in answering this question is to have a complete understanding that when done correctly a lash extension will never do any harm. A trained and certified lash artist will apply the appropriate weight and length to the lashes individually in such a way as to maintain the natural lash cycle. Therefore the lash cycle of a client will be unaffected and will continue doing its every day thing in a healthy and harmonious way.
In addition, my lash artist babes out there, you should also pay attention to the lash growth and condition during scheduled fills. Ask if any changes or irritations have occurred, and freely inform your clients if they need to clean their lashes better. It is all part of the understanding and training any professional will have and convey.
Sadly, there are those individuals who give us a bad name and don’t do quality work that should be expected. Understandably, this is why we will get those types of fear-based questions. Many worry that over time their lashes will suffer. Honestly, if they are in the care of a considerate and professional artist, this does not need to be feared at all.
I have a friend who has been getting lash extensions for over 8 years and they look as full and beautiful as ever. She maintains a healthy style and length for her natural lashes and they have been flirty and flattering all these years. Lashes are a personal preference and if taken care of properly and done correctly there is no reason it can’t be a lasting beauty enhancement. Just remember, as a lash artist, we wouldn’t have a profession if the way we applied lash extensions permanently damaged clients’ lashes. So, it is on you to make sure you are doing your best to care for your clients and your profession by staying educated and by practicing good habits. Be the best, you know you want to be.
