TIS THE LASHDADDY SEASON

We love to hear the personal stories that have shaped our staff and clients. We asked clients to share some of their favorite holiday traditions with us and with permission we are excited to share a few of our favorites with all of you.

“As a child I loved the game ‘I Spy’. During Christmas my mom, sister, and I would play I Spy with all of the ornaments on the tree. Our mom would choose a random night during the week leading up to Christmas to hide a small gift for each of us in the tree as part of the game. This game continues now and we also carried the game over into our nightly drives to all of the neighborhoods with the best Christmas lights and decorations.”

“My parents were insentient on helping others during the Holiday Season. When I was younger I think it sometimes got on my nerves, if I’m being honest. I didn’t understand why we were spending money on people we didn’t know when we didn’t have a lot ourselves. Why couldn’t that money just go for more toys for my brother and I?As an adult I have kept the tradition going. My parents still adopt a family and I too adopt my own. We meet up and share the information we know about the families and their needs before hitting the stores. I am thankful they made us join them as children because eventually I grasp the understanding and happiness from helping others.”

“A new tradition at our house is that crazy Elf on a Shelf. I have taken some really hilarious photos with that thing! If you don’t have kids you may not know about Elf on a Shelf but if you do, it’s worth getting. Our kids are so excited every single morning to see what Buddy has been into. There are websites with ideas that I had to look up because I was running out of creative, new scenes to set up halfway through December last year. We keep Buddy (our Elf’s name) around until Christmas night.”

“Our family is from North Carolina. We moved to Vegas, when I was seventeen. Each year we all travel back home to see our family and enjoy our yearly snowball fight. This year we have decided not to travel because we do not want to take any chances on getting the older family members sick with COVID. I will miss our tradition but I am looking forward to my first year of a more slow paced Holiday too.”
~ Alicia A.

“We have a few traditions but my absolute favorite is visiting the Magical Forest! We have gone every year since I was little. It is beautiful and the perfect way to get into the holiday/giving spirit! Magical Forest is an event facilitated by a nonprofit organization who has served people with intellectual disabilities since the 50’s. They do things like, teach people trades and skills or have art forums. The forest is closed this year but their website says they plan to reopen for 2021. Because my mom and I were disappointed in their decision to close this year, my dad has decided to make up for it. He has been to Lowe’s probably fifty times and is still adding decorations to the house, top to bottom, inside and out. He is the best!! If you read this, thanks dad! We love you!”
